2015 Amira Amir

Hey, my name is Amira Amir and my major is interior design in the Canadian University of Dubai. I am originally from England; I was born and brought up in Kuwait. Homelessness as an issue in today's society is largely ignored. To many, the problem of homelessness is invisible or barely noticed. When these people do see the homeless it is found in the form of beggars who need to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps” or mentally ill people who “just can't help themselves”. In either case the central point remains; the homeless must be people who are incapable or unwilling to help themselves. The main reason why I chose to volunteer is because I feel there is a need to reduce the number of people from different segments of the society who have to suffer without a roof over their head because of the deficiency of support and shelter. I would like in those 5 days to help dispel the stereotypes about people who are homeless, giving people who are homeless the same courtesy and respect you would give to any other person, treat them as you would wish to be treated if you needed assistance. Learn about the different reasons for homelessness, and remember, every situation is worth taking part in
